If you’re looking for mesmerizing tribal culture, awe-inspiring wildlife, vibrant coral reefs, or beautiful mountains, Garissa has it all. The Tana River flows through the city creating a beautiful oasis of sandy beaches.
Most of the town’s inhabitants are ethnic Somalis and pastoralists. These are further sub-divided into clans, with the Ogaden sub-clan of the Somali especially well-represented.

Unlike pastoralism and beekeeping, tourism is not a major activity in Garissa County. Its landscape is mostly arid, desert terrain filled with mountainous dunes, beaches, deserts, colorful cultures and wildlife attractions. From its mesmerizing tribal culture to its awe-inspiring wildlife, Garissa has something for everyone.
Garissa adventures
The town has few tourist attractions, but all of them are worth visiting. It provides valuable insight into Somali culture without crossing into Somalia itself. The streets are painted brightly, and the buildings are examples of excellent architecture. If you’re looking for some adventure and excitement, go on a wild safari and experience the adrenaline rush.
Dance, eating and Drinking
This is a predominantly Muslim town, so alcohol isn’t widely available. Having said that, The Major Club opposite the Nomad Hotel is the most popular gathering place for non-Muslim locals and guests. There are also a handful of places to socialize and have a cold drink, like the Government Guest House and Jamhuri Club.

Garissa is a wonderful town with its rugged terrain, panoramic landscapes, lush greenery and friendly people. Its chief attractions include, Experiencing the thrill and wilderness of the wildlife. Hitting the golden sandy beaches and getting involved in the beach activities like swimming, beach volleyball etc.
Garissa boasts of the most unique game viewing experience as the county is a host of national reserves such as Arawale National reserve a home to the Hirola Antelope.
The Boni National Reserve is a great place to view wildlife, with Topi antelopes and plenty of other game to see. It’s located on the south of Garissa town, bordering Lamu County – so you’ll see elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and many other animals. There’s also over 100 different bird species to see.
The Garissa Community Giraffe Sanctuary is a community-based conservation project located in Bour-Algi village. It was first established by locals to host internally displaced giraffes that had been affected by the armed conflict on the Kenya-Somalia border. Today, it is home to over 60 reticulated giraffes and other animals like Kirk’s dik-dik, gerenuk, lesser kudu, and warthog.
The Garissa Culture and Heritage Center is a great place to learn about Somali culture. They host an annual cultural week in September, and it’s a great opportunity to learn about the way of life of the local people. You can enjoy traditional Somali food and drinks, listen to traditional songs and dances, and learn about the culture and heritage of the Somali people

How to get around
It is about 5 hours 30 minutes’ drive from Nairobi. Also, there are commercial flights from Nairobi to Garissa airstrip. Alternatively, another option would be to Book your safari with a tour company.
