The name “Kajiado” was derived from the local tem, “Olkeju-ado” which translates to ‘along the river’. The Local people are predominantly of the Maasai tribe.

The county is filled with an abundance of activities to do. For instance, Olorgesailie is a pre-historic site located along Magadi road. The site features an accumulation of stone tools used by prehistoric men. You get to camp and sleep under the stars, just like the early man. It holds the crown for having the highest number of migratory birds in Kenya.
Another place that is a must see is the Selenkay Conservancy. Historically, it is one of the pioneers of community conservation in Kenya. It rests on about 15, 000 acres of land that was chartered from the local Maasai community. It was established as an initiative to promote wildlife rather than farming for the local community.
The natural awe of the Nyiri Desert should be seen to be appreciated. It is also known as the Nyika/Taru desert. The vast desert features arid trees and bushes which provide shelter to wildlife. You can visit the desert and be engulfed by the diversity of the wildlife in Kajiado County.
How often would you come across an ostrich farm? Well, in Kajiado, this is the norm. The Maasai Ostrich Farm is located on the outskirts of Kitengela town. It is a perfect place to get up close with ostriches and also learn various facts concerning the life cycle of ostriches. You can also enjoy ostrich rides at the farm.
Kajiado is famous for renowned for its Nyama Choma delicacy. It would be a crime to go to Kajiado and not pass by Ole Polos. It is a hidden gem located in Kajiado County. You can visit the place to enjoy some nyama choma, have a welcoming experience of the Maasai culture and the breathtaking sceneries of Ngong ranges.

HOW TO GET AROUND
Kitengela is served by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Athi River SGR station as well as a future commuter rail station that is currently under construction that will connect commuters to Nairobi CBD. Although, due to its proximity to the capital city, one can choose to drive down the scenic road, hire a taxi or private car hire.
