Explore Kilifi.
Kilifi offers a side slash of white sand, with swaying palms and rolling Indian Ocean surf. It’s the stuff of which fantasies are made. The community consists of perpetual pizza ovens, permaculture projects and sailing schools, beach barbecues and night swimming. You’ll find utopian groves that create an ecosystem bustling with hermit crabs and oysters.
Kilifi adventures
Bofa Beach is a hidden gem on the Kenyan coast. It’s well known for its inland creek and excellent sailing club, but what locals know is that the beach is something special. With its white sand and stunning views, Bofa Beach is a paradise straight out of a magazine. It’s hard to beat the laid-back charm of Kilifi, but Bofa Beach comes close. There’s not a lot to do in Kilifi, but that’s part of its appeal. Meander down the creek on a paddle boat, stroll down the immaculate Bofa road, learn to sail, kitesurf or dive, or simply spend the day discovering the cocktail menu at Salty’s. Barefoot beach dreams.
Dance, eating and drinking
Kilifi has more to offer than just its looks. It has plenty in the way of wholesome entertainment to keep even the most avid partygoer entertained.
Che Shale Hotel, is known for having the best farm to plate seafood experience in Kenya. The restaurant is curated within an ambience that can be best described as castaway-chic, and by a beach that literally shimmers. A slice of heaven can definitely be attained while digging into their gargantuan crab from their organic crab farm, served in various ways blended with local flavors and spices.
Kilifi is in itself a beautifully diverse location. This can be seen best once you step into Hosteria Romana. It can, quite easily, coin the term “Little Italy”. They host weekly pizza nights on Fridays, creating a tradition within the community.
Another great moonlight escapade can be found in Distant Relatives who host a sail with dinner on a secluded temporary beach. A jolly Captain will pick you up from Fumbene Beach for a sail down the creek while treating you to a delectable Swahili dinner cooked on the dhow.
What to see and do
The partly excavated, atmospheric ruins of the Swahili city of Mnarani, just west of the old ferry landing stage on the southern bank of Kilifi Creek. The best-preserved ruin is the Great Mosque, with its intricate inscription around the mihrab (prayer niche showing the direction of Mecca). Under the minaret lies the skeleton of the alleged founder of the town. Don’t miss the special garden of monstrous baobab trees with the largest is a right-royal 900-year-old beauty.
Another fascinating adventure can be found just outside the village of Takaungu. Fly on the back of a motorbike down dirt roads, the land abruptly ends in jagged black coral cliffs, pounded relentlessly by the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean. It’s a solitary, obscure place that seems like a secret portal into Scotland with lots of lovely spots for wild, romantic camping.
Where to stay
Accommodation in Kilifi ranges from opulent private villas to whimsical boutique hotels. The gorgeous beach houses stand atop the creek. They are complemented by the yachts dancing in the bay and warm waves wash beaches on the soft white sands. As always villas and cottages are more affordable the depending on the distance away from the beach and prices come down accordingly, a house on the creek is a good option for affordable staycations whilst still enjoying the perks of a breeze.
There are also an array of mid-range resorts, a good example being the Mnarani Club, overlooking Kilifi creek. Other good options are Bofa Beach Kilifi Resort and Salty’s Kite Surfing.
