What to see and do.
Due to its proximity to Nairobi, the county acts as a launch town for safari trips. For instance, the Iveti Forest is the second highest peak in Machakos County. It comprises of scenic peaks, cedar and pine trees as well as an abundant flora and fauna. You can visit the forest for birdwatching activities and hiking.
Not too fat from there, we have the Lukenya Caves, which carry memories from our freedom fighting ancestors. They were used as hideouts for mau-mau freedom fighters during the pre-colonial era.
Another fascinating site is the Kyamwilu Magical Corner. It is a mysterious attraction located along the Machakos- Mutituni road, where there is a natural gravitational anomaly. It is a mystical nook where people visit to watch water flow upwards the hill.
Last but not least, machakos people’s park is a beautifully curated park complete with interactive art installations, an amphitheater, children’s’ play area, dancing water fountain, solar exhibition stands, conference facilities, miniature golf courses, restaurants and an artificial lake ideal for speed boat rides
Where to stay
Machakos is known for its natural wonders, rolling hills and hidden gems. It is a great place to stay if you’re looking for some peace and quiet. It’s situated in a beautiful piece of unspoilt land, only 30 minutes from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The camp is set on the Kapiti Plains, opposite the rugged Lukenya Hill, and is nestled in a glade of shady yellow fever trees.
How to get around
Its proximity to Nairobi makes it very accessible. It is only a 30minute drive from the airport, if you land in JKIA. There are also public means such as a matatu. Uber or bolt.
