Tanga offers a beautifully diverse ecosystem from the towering Usambara Mountains, immaculate marine parks, and towns rich in culture.
Explore Tanga
The Tanga region covers an area of 26,667 km2 and is comparable in size to the combined land area of the nation state of Burundi. The regional capital is Tanga city. The region is bordered by Kenya, Kilimanjaro Region, Manyara Region, Morogoro Region and Pwani Region. It has a coastline along the Indian Ocean. The average temperature range during the hot months of December to March is between 26 – 32 degrees C. And an average temperature range of 20 – 28 degrees C during the cooler months of May to October.
Tanga Adventures
Tanga Region is also home to largest cave system in East Africa, the Amboni Caves. Tanga is home to rich biodiversity of plants and animals. Tanga Region is home to two major national parks, Mkomazi National Park, which is shared with southern Kilimanjaro Region, home to the endangered Black rhinoceros and the African wild dog. The Saadani National Park, is the other one. The only national park in Tanzania that shares an ocean coastline.
The region is home to the Usambara Mountains. Here we have Amani Nature Reserve, home to the Amani Forest Tree Frog, Usambara torrent frog and rare bird species like the Usambara thrush, Usambara eagle-owl, Usambara weaver and the Usambara double-collared sunbird a. In addition, rare reptiles such as Usambara dwarf gecko, and endangered mammals such as the Usambara shrew are also found in the mountains. Tanga has one of the largest protected marine parks, Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park.

Tanga has numerous restaurants, serving up everything from local Swahili cuisine, pizza to sizzlers. Visiting a local café or stall to try East African and the local dishes is highly recommended.
What to See and Do
There are numerous activities for the adventurous and outdoors person ranging from mountain hiking and fishing to kayaking and scuba diving, visiting pre- historic sites as well as engaging with the locals in their open air markets.
Irente Biodiversity Reserve is also ideal for visitors looking to experience nature hikes in an interesting environment. Maziwe Island Marine Reserve is known for having one of the world’s most well-preserved coral reefs. Take a snorkeling or diving trip to see for yourself. Also of interest are the Galanos hot springs, Toten Island, Urithi Tanga Museum, Tanga War Memorials, Ndumi Village defense works, Mwarongo sand beaches and protected coastal mangroves, Tanga cultural heritage and Pangani beach. Urithi Tanga Museum is a rich source of Tangas’ heritage. It is open Mon – Sat 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sun 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Magoroto Forest Estate is a delight for the outdoorsy nature inclined person and it is near the Urithi Tanga Museum.
Where to Stay

How to Get Around
Tanga has a small domestic airport, with regular flights scheduled from Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar – most international flights will go via Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam. To get around the region, you can use local buses. Another way to explore the region is by hiring a car. In spite of the fact that Tanga’s roads are in good shape, in rural areas you’ll encounter poorer road conditions which might require the use of off road 4by4 vehicles to maneuver.
